Four Decades of Painting West Virginia

Tom Acosta: Four Decades of Painting West Virginia celebrated the remarkable career of one of the state's most recognizable contemporary painters. Presented by Rizo/Bickey at The Grant Building, the exhibition featured a retrospective spanning forty years of Acosta's work, highlighting the landscapes, architecture, history, and people that have inspired his artistic journey throughout West Virginia.

An Artist Rooted in Appalachia

Born in Iaeger, West Virginia, Tom Acosta is a self-taught artist whose work has earned national recognition while remaining deeply connected to his Appalachian roots. His paintings reflect a lifelong appreciation for the state's small towns, historic buildings, rural landscapes, and the quiet moments that define everyday life. Throughout his career, Acosta has developed a distinctive style that blends realism with atmosphere, inviting viewers to experience familiar places with fresh perspective.

Forty Years of Creativity

The exhibition brought together paintings from across four decades, offering visitors the opportunity to see the evolution of Acosta's artistic vision. From intimate rural scenes to iconic public murals found throughout Welch, Princeton, and Hinton, the collection demonstrated both the technical mastery and emotional depth that have made his work a lasting part of West Virginia's cultural landscape.

A Celebration of West Virginia

More than a retrospective, the exhibition celebrated the communities that inspired Acosta's work. Visitors experienced paintings that preserve the beauty of Appalachian churches, historic homes, mountain landscapes, and everyday life while enjoying live music, local sponsors, and opportunities to meet the artist and fellow West Virginians who share a passion for the state's artistic heritage.

Art, Music & Storytelling

One of the exhibition's highlights featured an appearance by legendary songwriter John Ellison, whose lifelong friendship with Tom Acosta added another layer to the celebration. Visitors had the opportunity to meet both artists while viewing Acosta's study for a commissioned portrait of Ellison, creating a memorable weekend that brought together visual art, music, and Appalachian storytelling.
