The Four West Virginia Regionalists

A celebration of four artists whose work captures the spirit of Appalachia.

Depicting Appalachia

The Four West Virginia Regionalists: Depicting Appalachia brought together the work of Robert Walker, John Coffey, Fred Hays, and Tom Acosta in a landmark exhibition curated by José Rizo. Presented through a partnership between The Register-Herald and the Beckley Art Center, the exhibition explored the people, places, and traditions that define life throughout West Virginia. Each artist offered a distinct perspective while collectively celebrating the rich cultural identity of Appalachia.

Four Unique Perspectives

Although united by a shared connection to West Virginia, each artist approached the region through a unique artistic voice. Robert Walker's expressive oil paintings, John Coffey's masterful watercolors, Fred Hays' contemporary realism, and Tom Acosta's celebrated landscapes and murals showcased the remarkable diversity found within Appalachian art. Together, their works demonstrated how a single region can inspire countless interpretations while remaining rooted in a common sense of place.

Bringing Appalachian Art Together

Curated by José Rizo, the exhibition was designed to highlight artists whose work authentically reflects the character of West Virginia. Rather than focusing on a single style or movement, the exhibition emphasized regional storytelling through landscapes, portraits, architecture, and everyday life. The result was a thoughtfully assembled collection that celebrated both the individuality of each artist and the shared experiences that connect their work.

Community Collaboration

Hosted at The Register-Herald in partnership with the Beckley Art Center, the exhibition welcomed visitors to a public opening reception featuring local food and an opportunity to meet the artists. The collaboration marked another step in strengthening Beckley's growing arts community by making exceptional regional artwork accessible to a wider audience and creating meaningful connections between artists and the public.

The Spirit of Appalachia

The exhibition celebrated Regionalism as both an artistic tradition and a reflection of Appalachian life. Through scenes of mountain towns, historic architecture, rural landscapes, and the people who call the region home, the exhibition documented the beauty, resilience, and cultural heritage of West Virginia. Each artist contributed a different visual language while honoring the same enduring sense of place.
