The Rizo Collection: Clyde Singer
Preserving American Art. Sharing It With West Virginia.

Preserving the Legacy of Clyde Singer
Clyde Singer was an important American Scene painter known for his realistic depictions of everyday American life. Born in Malvern, Ohio, Singer became recognized for paintings that captured rural communities, city streets, working people, and small-town America during the early-to-mid 20th century.
Today, his work remains an important part of American regional realism and American Scene painting. Through The Rizo Collection, Jose L. Rizo has helped preserve and share this artistic legacy with new audiences.
Who Was Clyde Singer?
Clyde Singer studied at the Art Students League of New York, where he worked among influential American artists connected to the American Scene movement. During his career, Singer painted landscapes, urban scenes, murals, etchings, and genre paintings that reflected daily American life.
His paintings often focused on ordinary people, rural communities, and moments of movement and activity. Over time, Singer developed a style that combined realism with strong color, structure, and storytelling.
Because of this, his work continues to appeal to collectors interested in American realism, regional art, and historical American painting.

Jose L. Rizo’s Interest in Clyde Singer
Jose L. Rizo developed an interest in Clyde Singer through a broader appreciation for American Scene painting and early American realism. As The Rizo Collection continued to grow, Jose became increasingly drawn to artists whose work documented authentic American experiences and preserved regional history through art.
Singer’s paintings stood out because they captured both rural and urban American life with honesty and emotion. The themes within his work closely aligned with the vision behind The Rizo Collection, which focuses on preserving historically important American artwork and cultural narratives.
Over time, Jose assembled a private Clyde Singer collection featuring important works connected to the artist’s career and legacy.
The Clyde Singer Collection at The Rizo Collection
The Clyde Singer collection within The Rizo Collection represents a carefully preserved group of works connected to American regional realism and American Scene painting.
The collection includes paintings that reflect Singer’s interest in community life, working Americans, country scenes, and urban environments. Many of the works highlight the storytelling and realism that made Singer an important American painter of the 20th century.
As a private collection, these works are rarely seen publicly. However, Jose L. Rizo believes important American art should remain accessible whenever possible.

Donation and Exhibition at the Malvern Historical Society
In 2022, The Rizo Collection partnered with the Malvern Historical Society in Malvern, Ohio, to present a rare public exhibition of Clyde Singer paintings from the collection.
The exhibition featured approximately twenty works from the private Clyde Singer collection owned by Jose L. Rizo. For many visitors, the exhibition created a meaningful opportunity to reconnect with one of Malvern’s most important artists.
The Malvern Historical Society publicly thanked Jose L. Rizo for sharing “a number of works by Malvern’s Clyde Singer” with the community. The paintings remained on display for nearly a month before returning to West Virginia with Jose and his wife, Shavona.
The exhibition was described as a rarity because privately held Clyde Singer works are not often available for public viewing. Through this partnership, The Rizo Collection helped make historically important American artwork accessible to Singer’s hometown community.
Continuing the Legacy of American Scene Painting
The Rizo Collection remains committed to preserving important examples of American realism and regional art. Through collecting, preservation, and public exhibitions, Jose L. Rizo continues to support the appreciation of artists like Clyde Singer and the stories their work represents.
The Clyde Singer collection reflects more than a passion for art collecting. It represents a commitment to preserving American cultural history and sharing it with future generations.
